5 Great Ideas from 'Hidden Potential' by Adam Grant.
Adam Grant has a new book out: ‘Hidden Potential’. A book about better ways to get better.
In this blog, you will read 5 ideas from Adam Grant’s brand new book ‘Hidden Potential’: one of the best leadership thinkers of our time. With fresh tips like: stop with feedback and stop with brainstorming.
Adam Grant is named the world’s #2 leadership thinker this year!
(Number 2 in the world… the first thing you want to know then is… who was number 1? It was none other than Harvard professor Amy Edmondson)
Adam Grant is 42 years young, but his CV is overwhelming:
Adam Grant is a true leader.
Oh, and a brilliant speaker, but more on that later.
Adam Grant has a new book out: Hidden Potential. A book about better ways to get better.
5 Concrete Insights and Ideas from the Book
Here are our 5 favorite insights from the book. Brief and to the point, but practical enough to try out.
#1: We are not freaks of nature but freaks of nurture
We place far too much emphasis on the successes people achieve in the early stages of their careers and underestimate our own growth potential. Many people only flourish and succeed later on. Or they were ahead of their time. The only thing that matters in talent development is how much someone has improved.
Don’t ask people during a job interview: ‘what is your weakness,’ but ‘what have you done to overcome your weakness.’
When you ask for feedback, you get insights focused on how you performed in the past. Instead, ask for advice. That’s aimed at how you can get better in the future.
Adam does this with his college students: he doesn’t ask for feedback on his lessons but asks for one concrete idea on what can be improved next time. It works much better.
In a brainstorm, the ideas of the loudest and most extroverted team members automatically take center stage. Shame! This overshadows the ideas of smart, introverted people.
Prefer brainwriting: everyone independently writes down as many ideas as possible. All these ideas are then anonymously shared with the group, and each team member weighs and evaluates them. This leads to more creativity and more ideas in less time.
That’s what you want, isn’t it?
You only grow from things that really challenge you. Things that are difficult. The point is: these things can also fail. That’s not a problem; you just need to create a ‘budget and target’ for it.
Adam Grant has room in his yearly plan for 3 projects that are allowed to fail. That provides breathing space. And an unexpected side effect: if nothing has failed after a year, it’s a sign that you haven’t challenged yourself enough.
Sometimes you feel like you’re not making progress, like you’re going in circles. Don’t worry and keep going. Many of those circles later turn out to be upward spirals. And you just had to go through that initial phase.
Adam’s advice: start before you feel comfortable starting. You’ll get that feeling of comfort once you’re underway.
It wasn’t easy, but we managed: Adam Grant is coming to Amsterdam. He is one of the headliners of the Amsterdam Business Forum on September 27th at AFAS Live.
This is the first time Grant will speak in the Netherlands: live and in person. A unique opportunity to see this young science rockstar in person. Talking about his new book.
He will share the stage at the Amsterdam Business Forum with, among others, Joseph Oubelkas and… Brené Brown. All live on one stage in Amsterdam. You don’t want to miss this.Adam Grant has a new book out: ‘Hidden Potential.’ A book about better ways to get better.

About Sanna Marin

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Marin led her country through the most swift NATO accession process in the whole history of the alliance.
